VivaNext plans for a modern, rapid transit system including more rapidways, subway service and mixed-use transit/pedestrian-friendly centres. VivaNext is the next generation of rapid transit in York Region. Rapidways allow Viva vehicles to zip past congested traffic. Stations are placed every kilometre or so, with passenger access located at signalized intersections. In response to emergencies, police, fire and ambulance vehicles are permitted to use the rapidways and cross the median at designated intervals. Rapidways are dedicated lanes in the centre of the road for Viva vehicles only. It also supports a number of Regional policies through promoting a transit-supportive public realm, well-designed and accessible public places and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes. This is achieved by a unified and cohesive Regional image while making 'places' within the public realm.
